Lean Manufacturing Kanban Spreadsheets

Kanban in Lean Manufacturing

Where it is not possible to create flow, the best solution is often to implement Kanban stock control.

When the customer (internal/external) has emptied a box/pallet, a signal is sent to the supplier (internal/external). The supplier now replenishes the box or pallet.

It demands good discipline to run Kanban. Cards must not be lost and audits should be continuously accomplished.

Advantages when using Kanban instead of MRP

Kanban continuously adjusts the stock level to the actual demand. When the demand increases/decreases – Kanban follows.

Kanban limits the stock level and improves the delivery service.

Kanban is a more understandable and visible system than MRP.

Two different principles. Read more below and follow links to download free spreadsheets ready to use. No restrictions at all.

Simple Kanban

"Simple Kanban" audits the Kanban level per code number based on the physical number of cards/boxes in stock. No other data is included in the audit. The levels are then audited based on the development in the physical number of cards/boxes compared with the total number of cards/boxes in circulation.

I.e. if the number of physical boxes in stock of a code number are equal to - or nearly equal to - the total number of Kanban cards on this code number, then the number of Kanban cards should be reduced. And the opposite.

Advanced Kanban

"Advanced Kanban" audits the Kanban level per code number based on monthly consumption data from the MRP/ERP system and the lead time from the supplier(s).

The calculation includes monthly consumption, standard deviation, service level based on normal distribution theory and trend in sales (optional).
